Is It Baby Blues, or Something More: How to Distinguish Baby Blues from Postpartum Depression

At some point, most therapists will come across a client who is pregnant or who has recently had a baby who suffers from depressed mood and other depression-like symptoms. But how do we determine whether it's "regular" depression, postpartum depression, or just the baby blues? Accurate diagnosis can help clinicians create the most effective treatment plans and help their clients find relief, even if they don't specialize in perinatal mental health. Using practical, case-based examples, this training will cover two of the most common perinatal mood disorders and best practices for treating them. By the end of the training, participants will:
Chana Johnson is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and certified Trauma Sensitive Yoga Facilitator (TCTSY-F). She is the owner of Aspire Counseling and Wellness, a small group practice in Maryland. Certified in perinatal mental health (PMH-C), she specializes in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, perinatal loss, and couples’ work. She also currently serves as the lead for the Maryland chapter of the Star Legacy Foundation, which focuses on education, advocacy, and support for women and families that have experienced a stillbirth. Chana holds a Master of Science degree in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics which she uses to create a YouTube video series called Relationship Physics, which helps to illustrate how the laws of physics apply to relationships. She also shares practical wisdom on various topics via a video series called 60 Seconds of Sanity, which can be found on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. A married mom of five, when she's not working, she's usually reading a book.
