Is It Baby Blues, or Something More: How to Distinguish Baby Blues from Postpartum Depression

Presented by Chana Johnson, LCPC

At some point, most therapists will come across a client who is pregnant or who has recently had a baby who suffers from depressed mood and other depression-like symptoms. But how do we determine whether it's "regular" depression, postpartum depression, or just the baby blues? Accurate diagnosis can help clinicians create the most effective treatment plans and help their clients find relief, even if they don't specialize in perinatal mental health. Using practical, case-based examples, this training will cover two of the most common perinatal mood disorders and best practices for treating them. By the end of the training, participants will:

  • Learn how to differentiate between the baby blues and postpartum depression
  • Learn how to adequately screen and diagnose these conditions
  • Understand the role of partners and families in recognizing and supporting a mom experiencing PPD
  • Identify treatment approaches for both conditions
  • Learn ways that moms can build resilience and wellness moving forward
