About Us

The Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors of Maryland (LCPCM) is over 30 years old. We are a voluntary state chapter of the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA).

LCPCM, formerly the Maryland Mental Health Counselors Association (MdMHCA) is one of the leading non-profit membership organizations that actively and successfully lobbied for licensure for Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors (LCPCs) and later for Licensed Graduate Professional Counselors (LGPCs) in Maryland.

Mission Statement

LCPCM advocates for LCPCs and LGPCs by working to enhance opportunities for professional growth, employment, clinical competency, parity and legislative equity, while ensuring that mental health treatment services are available and accessible to those we serve.

Purpose

To promote the profession of LCPCs and LGPCs
To advocate for the rights and safety of clients in treatment with LCPCs and LGPCs
To provide professional development to LCPCs and LGPCs
To provide liaison with other professional groups at state and national levels to assist the advancement of the mental health field
To provide information about events and developments which affect the current and future practice of LCPC’s and LGPCs
To provide opportunities for LCPCs and LGPCs to network with colleagues throughout the state of Maryland
To educate the public about the qualifications and expertise of LCPCs and LGPCs
To support and promote a code of ethics for LCPCs and LGPCs
To ensure that LCPCs and LGPCs have a secure and respected role in the provision of counseling services.

We will continue to advocate for counselors and for quality care for our clients.

LCPCM Legislative accomplishments:

Licensure for LCPCs,providing rigorous standards for counselors(1998)
LCPC privileged communication to protect the confidentiality of our clients in court (1999)
LCPCs became providers under BCBS Federal Employee Program Plans (2000)
Authorization to sign and implement Emergency Petition Evaluations (2001)
LGPC credential for counseling graduates (2002)
Amended the state Insurance Code which broadened the scope of mandatory reimbursement for clients of LCPCs (2003)
Job classification designation for LCPCs with corresponding career track for counselors who work for the State of Maryland (2009)

The Board of Directors meets monthly to conduct Association business. The Board consists of the Executive Director, President, Treasurer, Secretary and two Board Members at Large. Committee Chairs consists of Legislative, Membership, Professional Development, Supervision, Newsletter, LGPC/Student Liaison, Managed Care and Lunch and Learn.
